Surabaya, August 2, 2025 – In celebration of its 10th anniversary, AEON Indonesia carried out an environmental conservation initiative by planting 5,000 mangrove seedlings at the Wonorejo Mangrove Ecotourism Area in Surabaya, East Java. This activity follows a similar mangrove planting program held earlier at Mangunharjo Beach, Semarang, Central Java, on July 31, 2025, as part of AEON Indonesia’s commitment to environmental sustainability and reducing carbon emissions in coastal areas.
This planting initiative also symbolizes AEON Indonesia’s growth in harmony with nature, as it prepares to open its 13th AEON Supermarket at Pakuwon Mall Surabaya later this year.
“Wherever there is AEON, trees will grow with us,” said Osamu Okushima, General Manager of AEON Indonesia.
“We want to ensure that our business expansion always brings positive impact to the environment and surrounding communities,” he added.
The mangrove planting program is conducted in collaboration with the environmental organization Seasoldier, which is also celebrating its 10th anniversary. To date, Seasoldier has more than 10,000 volunteers across 17 regions/branches throughout Indonesia, consistently taking real and sustainable actions to protect the natural environment.
On August 2, a total of 500 mangrove seedlings will be planted directly, while the remaining 4,500 will be planted by Seasoldier in the following days.
Mangroves were chosen due to their vital role in maintaining coastal ecosystems. In addition to providing natural habitats for thousands of species, mangroves serve as natural barriers against coastal erosion and natural disasters such as waves and storms. Their strong root systems can hold sediment from rivers and land, slow down coastal abrasion, and filter out harmful particles that could pollute the sea, coral reefs, and seagrass beds.
According to the American Museum of Natural History (amnh.org), mangrove root systems form a natural defense against storm surges and major floods, while also helping preserve water and soil quality in coastal regions.
This 10th anniversary celebration marks a special moment for both AEON Indonesia and Seasoldier to plant seeds of hope, growth, and sustainability for Indonesia—unifying their commitment to sustainability and creating a broader positive impact on the environment.
